Maarten Baas

Furniture Designer Martin Baas began Smoke as his graduation project and he has been setting fire to furniture ever since. Smoke established Baas at the forefront of the fashionable expressionist style of furniture design. By artfully burning existing furniture pieces, Baas questions our perceptions of the beauty and value of objects in mediagenic pieces. Smoke was the star of the Eindhoven exhibition at the 2003 Milan Furniture Fair. Commissions rolled in, and now Maarten Baas manufactures his Smoke range of dining chairs and armchairs among others through his own company, Moooi.
