Redefining modern luxury: Ethical jewellery with Leyla Abdollahi

At La Maison Couture, we’re always drawn to designers who see jewellery as more than something beautiful to wear. The pieces that stay with us tend to carry a story, a point of view, and a sense of intention behind them.

That’s exactly why we love Leyla Abdollahi’s work. Her pieces feel sculptural, fluid and emotional - somewhere between art and jewellery. But what resonates just as strongly is her approach to ethical jewellery, responsible sourcing and conscious luxury. For Leyla, sustainability isn’t a marketing concept. It’s simply part of designing with integrity.

As an independent jewellery designer, she represents a growing movement within the industry - designers who see sustainability in jewellery, transparent sourcing and longevity as essential to modern luxury.

In this ethical jewellery designer interview, we spoke with Leyla about creativity, protecting your vision in the jewellery industry, and why modern luxury is shifting away from perfection and towards meaning.

JEWELLERY AS WEARABLE ART & EMOTIONAL DESIGN

Leyla describes herself as an artist first, and that’s clear when you see her work.

“I’m an artist at heart,” she says. “Everything starts very fluidly for me, which is why my jewellery often feels sculptural and narrative-driven.”

Many of the ideas behind her pieces begin in painting, where emotion and movement shape the first concepts.

“There is always a concept and a story. My paintings are quite surreal, fluid and emotional, and I bring that same flow into the jewellery. It becomes a way of translating those ideas into something physical.”

Her work reflects a growing interest in jewellery as wearable art, pieces that carry emotion, movement and meaning rather than simply decoration.

For Leyla, the goal isn’t simply adornment.

“I’m not trying to decorate the body. I’m translating art into something tangible, intimate and alive.”

The result is jewellery that feels deeply personal - an example of emotional jewellery design where form, movement and storytelling meet.

PROTECTING CREATIVE VISION IN THE JEWELLERY INDUSTRY

After many years working in the fine jewellery industry, Leyla says the biggest challenge has been staying true to her voice.

“The hardest part has been protecting my vision in a space that constantly tries to soften or dilute it.”

It’s something many independent jewellery designers experience, especially when navigating an industry shaped by trends and   commercial pressure.

“I had to learn that not every opportunity is an alignment. Once I understood that, everything became clearer, stronger and more intentional.”

Protecting that clarity, she believes, is what allows a designer’s work to evolve authentically.

SUSTAINABILITY IN JEWELLERY: BEYOND TRENDS

As conversations around sustainable jewellery, ethical jewellery brands in the UK and responsible sourcing grow louder across the industry, Leyla takes a refreshingly honest approach.

“For me, sustainability in jewellery isn’t a trend - it’s a responsibility.”

Ethical jewellery begins with how materials are sourced and how transparently designers communicate their practices. Leyla focuses on working with suppliers she trusts and maintaining honesty about what is realistically achievable.

“I work consciously with suppliers I trust, and I stay honest about what’s possible. It’s important not to fall into greenwashing.”

Her approach reflects a broader shift towards transparent sourcing and responsible jewellery sourcing within modern jewellery design.

But sustainability, she says, ultimately goes beyond materials.

“The most sustainable jewellery is jewellery that lasts - emotionally and physically. Pieces that stay with someone rather than being treated as disposable.”

This philosophy aligns closely with the growing movement toward slow luxury, where longevity, craftsmanship and emotional connection matter more than fast trends.

JEWELLERY THAT RESONATES: CONSCIOUS CONSUMPTION

The people drawn to Leyla’s work often share a similar mindset.

“They’re intuitive and design-aware,” she says. “They’re not buying jewellery to impress anyone. They choose it because it resonates.”

In a world increasingly shaped by conscious consumption, jewellery is becoming less about status and more about personal meaning.

“I connect with clients through story and honesty, whether that’s in person, through the work itself, or through the way the pieces are presented. When it’s aligned, you feel it immediately. People choose my jewellery because it resonates with them.”

For many collectors, this shift reflects a deeper desire for meaningful jewellery - pieces that carry emotional value and personal significance.

ADVICE FOR EMERGING JEWELLERY DESIGNERS

The jewellery world is evolving quickly - from sustainability expectations to digital craftsmanship -  but Leyla believes one thing matters above all.

“Don’t chase validation. Build clarity.”

Trends and technologies will keep changing, she says, but identity is what grounds a designer.

“If you don’t know who you are as a designer, the industry will decide for you. Learn the tools, respect the craft, but protect your point of view. That’s what really lasts.”

It’s advice many aspiring designers entering the sustainable jewellery movement could benefit from.

WHAT MODERN LUXURY JEWELLERY MEANS TODAY

Leyla has often been described as a designer who is helping redefine what modern luxury jewellery looks like.

For her, the meaning of luxury has shifted dramatically.

“Luxury today isn’t really about price, logos or perfection anymore. That idea feels outdated.”

Instead, modern luxury is increasingly defined by intention, craftsmanship and meaning.

“Real luxury is about meaning and presence - creating pieces that carry emotional weight. If it doesn’t carry soul, story and integrity, then it’s just decoration. And decoration is never truly luxurious.”

In many ways, this shift reflects the rise of conscious luxury jewellery, where beauty, ethics and storytelling exist together.
