Since the dawn of time, metals and gemstones have been so valuable that they have always been recycled - melted down and used again and again. Bergsoe acknowledges this approach to sustainability in their workshop in Copenhagen, where all their jewellery is made by hand. They only use recycled gold and silver from their dealer AG, which helps to ensure a responsible supply chain, both ethically, socially and environmentally.
The gemstones they use originate primarily from dealers with whom they have worked with for 20-30 years, and who themselves travel across most of the world, and buy raw stones or cut stones. In this way Bergsoe can trust that they ensure proper working and environmental conditions in the production. Their use of diamonds is all subject to the Kimberley Convention, and in addition, their dealers have committed not to trade in Russian diamonds. Bergsoe use obsolete stones with inclusions, crooked cuts or special colours, which do not come from large grinding plants, but from smaller independent workshops, where the potential of each stone is exploited, instead of standardising the stones in a larger production. They often use pearls in their jewellery, and always baroque natural pearls from Southsea, Tahiti and Keshi pearls, which cannot be grown if the sea is not clean and free of pollution.
